SURGICAL TREATMENT OF VESTIBULAR VERTIGO (MENIERE¢¥ S DISEASE)

Abstract
|
|
|
Surgical intervention for the vertigo is indicated when a patient with Meniere¢¥s disease to have severe disablling attacks of vertigo despite an adequate trial on medical treatment.
A number of surgical procedures are investigated by otologic surgeons with recent developement of neurotology.
These may be classified as follows
1) Complete destruction of the labyrinth or section of eighth cranial nerve to eliminate both vestibular and cochlear symptoms.
2) Decompression of the labyrinth to control the pathology of Meniere¢¥s disease such as shunt operation, sacculotomy and Tack operation.
3) Partial or controlled destruction of the labyrinth designed to eliminate vertigo and preserve cochlear function, such as cryosurgery, electrocoagulation and ultrasonic irradiation.
4) Procedures for relief of vasospasm such as cervical sympathectomv.
